Supreme Court denies Bechan Jha’s release

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court has denied the release of Bechan Jha, who is currently in prison for his involvement as a mediator in the fake Bhutanese refugee case.

Jha had filed a writ of habeas corpus seeking his release, but the court refused to grant his petition and asked the government to provide reasons for his detention.

Jha, who is presently being kept at the Jagannath Dewal Prison, had previously approached the Patan High Court after the Kathmandu District Court remanded him for trial.

The High Court, led by judges Anju Upreti Dhakal and Kailash Prasad Subedi, upheld the Kathmandu District Court’s decision to send Jha to remand.

The Kathmandu District Court had issued the remand order on August 18, 2024. Jha then filed a writ petition at the Supreme Court on December 19, 2024, which was heard by Justice Kumar Regmi.

Following a request for a report, Jha filed a habeas corpus petition on Wednesday. However, on Thursday, the Supreme Court bench, headed by Justice Nityanand Pandey, ruled against his release and directed the government to clarify the reasons for his continued detention.
