KATHMANDU: Home Minister Sudan Gurung has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to implementing the agreement reached with the families of the two youths killed in the Kaptangunj incident in Sunsari, saying truth, justice, and the rule of law remain the government’s top priorities.
Following the agreement reached late Thursday night with the families of Om Prakash Mehta and Jay Prakash Mehta, who were killed in the Kaptanganj incident in Dewanganj Rural Municipality-3 of Sunsari, the Home Minister reiterated the government’s commitment through a Facebook post on Friday morning.
He said the government would move forward in accordance with the agreement reached with the victims’ families and would take necessary decisions based on the report of the implementation and investigation committee.
“The Government of Nepal pays heartfelt tribute to Om Prakash Mehta and Jay Prakash Mehta, who lost their lives in the tragic incident,” Gurung wrote. Expressing deep condolences to the bereaved families, he said the government remains fully committed to implementing the agreement reached with them.
According to the Home Minister, the agreement includes initiating the process of declaring the deceased as martyrs, providing Rs 1 million in relief assistance to each family, conducting an impartial investigation into the incident, and taking legal action against those found responsible.
He also said that employment opportunities would be provided to eligible members of the victims’ families and that necessary coordination would be carried out for the construction of a memorial park in memory of the deceased.
As per the agreement, the last rites of the deceased are scheduled to be performed today.
