Commerce Department warns against sale and distribution of banned goods

KATHMANDU: The Department of Commerce, Supplies and Consumer Protection has urged importers, traders and distributors not to sell or distribute goods prohibited under existing laws, warning of strict legal action against violators.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Department reminded businesses that the Import and Export (Control) Act, 2013 empowers the government to prohibit or regulate the import and export of certain goods. Items banned under the law are not permitted to be sold or distributed in the domestic market.

The Department called on importers, stockists and traders to conduct business in compliance with all legal obligations and conditions.

It warned that individuals or business entities found violating the provisions would face action under the Import and Export (Control) Act, 2013, the Consumer Protection Act, 2018, and other applicable laws.

The Department also said it has intensified market monitoring in recent days. On Monday, inspection teams monitored nine business firms in Kathmandu and directed them to take corrective measures where necessary.

According to the Department, regular market inspections are being carried out with the participation of consumer rights activists and local stakeholders to strengthen consumer protection and market compliance.
