Hamas signals willingness to disarm in Gaza as Trump unveils ‘Board of Peace’ proposal

WASHINGTON DC: Hamas has indicated that it is prepared to fully disarm in the Gaza Strip, marking a potentially significant shift in the long-running conflict, after US President Donald Trump announced that a newly proposed “Board of Peace” initiative had reached an agreement on the issue.

A senior Hamas official said that the group had agreed to a plan for the complete disarmament of Hamas and other armed factions in Gaza, adding that an official statement would be issued soon, according to BBC. Israel had not publicly responded to the development at the time of reporting.

Trump said the agreement would lead to the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza “as disarmament is completed” and described the arrangement as “a critical step toward Gaza finally being governed by a new Palestinian government.”

The proposal forms part of the second phase of a broader US-brokered ceasefire framework for Gaza, which includes the dismantling of armed groups, security restructuring, and the establishment of a new governing authority.

If confirmed, the move would represent one of the most consequential developments in the Gaza conflict in recent years, as Hamas has historically resisted calls for disarmament. Analysts say the success of the plan will depend on verification mechanisms, the scope of Israeli withdrawal, and whether regional actors support the transition to a new Palestinian administration.

The announcement comes amid ongoing international efforts to secure a lasting ceasefire and address the humanitarian and political crisis in Gaza.
