PM Karki says Education Minister Mahabir Pun left govt in frustration

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has stated that former Education Minister Mahabir Pun resigned from the government in anger after being unable to pass a draft law he had prepared.

Speaking on Monday during a discussion on the Good Governance Policy Report in the National Assembly, PM Karki said, “Minister Mahabir Pun wanted to make certain laws and even prepared drafts. However, we were unable to complete them in a short time. Situations arise, and things don’t always go according to plan. When the law couldn’t be finalized, he left the government in frustration.”

She highlighted that staying in or leaving the government is a personal decision. “Who joins or leaves politics is an individual’s right,” she said. “Although some say this government is led by the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), that is not true.”

PM Karki also cited examples of ministers contesting elections under different parties. She noted that Information Minister Jagdish Kharel and Sports Minister Bablu Gupta are running for office under RSP, while Energy Minister Kulman Ghising belongs to his own party. She clarified that Pun resigned without joining any party.

Pun, who resigned on January 18, is now contesting the House of Representatives election from Myagdi as an independent candidate under the Tribhuj election symbol, receiving support from Ujyalo Nepal.
