Death toll rises to 14 in Himachal’s mandi as cloudbursts, flash floods cause havoc

MANDI: The death toll in Mandi district has climbed to 14 following devastating cloudbursts and flash floods that struck on the night of June 30 to July 1, causing large-scale destruction across the region.

According to Deputy Commissioner Apoorv Devgan, the worst-hit areas include Thunag, Karsog Gohar, and Dharampur subdivisions. Thirty-one people are still missing, and several remote villages remain cut off due to damaged roads and landslides.

“Entire households were washed away. People lost homes, livestock, and all means of survival,” said DC Devgan. Essential services including water, electricity, and communication lines have been severely affected.

In the face of the crisis, local organizations have stepped up. The Chail Chowk Vyapar Mandal of Nachan distributed ration kits to over 110 affected families in the Seraj region, one of the hardest-hit areas.

“We packed enough supplies to last families at least 10–15 days. It’s our way of supporting those in need,” said Rajkumar Thakur, President of the Mandal.

Rescue operations are ongoing, with teams from the NDRF, SDRF, and Army working to reach stranded villages. Access remains a challenge due to continuing landslides.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has termed the situation a “war-like disaster.” After a high-level review, the government has announced ₹5,000 per month in rental assistance to displaced families. The CM urged people to remain alert as further rainfall is expected.

Relief and recovery efforts continue amid uncertainty, with thousands still in shelters or stranded without basic needs.
