Rabi Lamichhane denies fraud and money laundering allegation in court
Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) chair Rabi Lamichhane, who has been in custody at the Kaski District Police Office since October 18 on charges of cooperative fraud, organized crime, and money laundering, began giving his statement in court on Thursday.
During the three-hour session, the former Home Minister refuted all allegations leveled against him, maintaining his denial as he did earlier with the police and government attorneys.
Govt to target unauthorized casinos under money laundering act
The government has expanded the scope of the Money Laundering Prevention Act to include unfair transactions, match-fixing in sports, and operating casinos without proper authorization.
Government spokesperson Prithvi Subba Gurung announced on Thursday that the Council of Ministers, during a meeting held today, decided to categorize these activities as offenses under the act.
Additionally, human trafficking, the use of virtual currencies, and hundi (illegal money transfers) have also been brought under its scope.
Prachanda calls for unity among Nepal’s communist forces
Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda,’ Chairman of Maoist Center, has called for the unification of Nepal’s communist revolutionary forces.
In a statement issued on Thursday to mark the birthday of Chinese communist leader Mao Zedong, Prachanda emphasized the importance of drawing inspiration from Mao’s thoughts and practices.
Karnali Development Bank’s trading suspended by SEBON
Karnali Development Bank Limited has had its trading suspended in the stock market.
The Securities Board of Nepal (SEBON ) issued a press release announcing the suspension, following a directive from Nepal Rastra Bank.
According to the letter dated December 25, 2024, the bank has been declared a problematic institution, resulting in the suspension of its Board of Directors and Chief Executive Officer, with management now under the control of Nepal Rastra Bank.
In response, SEBON has halted the trading of the bank’s securities to protect the interests of investors.
Gold prices up by Rs 600
The price of gold has gone up today.
According to the Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers Association, the price of gold has increased by Rs 600 per tola, bringing the current price to Rs 150,300 per tola.
ANNFSU raises concern over Lipulekh agreement between India and China
The All Nepal National Free Students Union (ANNFSU), a student organization aligned with the CPN-UML, has voiced serious concern over the recent agreement between India and China to designate Lipulekh, a disputed territory claimed by Nepal, as a pilgrimage center.
In a statement issued today, ANNFSU chair Aarti Lama criticized the agreement, describing it as “extremely shameful” that representatives of India and China reached such an understanding in Beijing without Nepal’s involvement or knowledge.
Chartered aircraft from China arrives in Pokhara Airport for Dragon Boat Race 2024
A chartered aircraft from China carrying officials, media personnel, and competitors for the upcoming International Dragon Boat Race 2024 landed at Pokhara International Airport at 9:45 am on Thursday.
The participants are set to compete in the second edition of the Dragon Boat Festival, which will kick off this Sunday.
A special dinner in honor of the participants will be hosted at the Pokhara on Saturday evening by the organizing committee. A total of 20 teams are participating, including 11 from Nepal, 8 from China, and one from Singapore.
