KATHMANDU: A meeting of top leaders of three major parties have agreed to form a ‘Search Committee’ or a recommendation committee for the formation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and the Commission of Inquiry into Disappearances.

A meeting of top leaders from the three major political parties held at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar on Thursday agreed to from the search committee.

According to the Prime Minister’s Secretariat, a cabinet meeting scheduled for tomorrow (Friday) will finalize the members of the committee.

The leaders of the three parties — CPN-UML, Nepali Congress, and Maoist Center — held in Baluwatar to address this issue.

Participants in the discussion included Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, Maoist Center leader Shakti Bahadur Basnet; and Attorney General Ramesh Badal.

A recommendation committee, comprising five members from the ruling and major opposition parties, will oversee the completion of the peace process.

This committee will provide recommendations for the appointments to the Truth Commission and the Reconciliation Commission, as mandated by law.

The search committee, led by a former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, will include a member from the National Human Rights Commission and three other members appointed by the Government of Nepal, one of whom is a woman.

The search committee will compile a list of candidates for the two commissions through a public call for applications.

Each commission will consist of five officials, making a total of ten members.

Once the Committee invites applications for the positions of commission members and chairman, qualified individuals may apply.

Public feedback will be collected on each applicant, and based on this input, the recommendation committee will suggest a qualified candidate for appointment.
