KATHMANDU: Shankar Pokharel, General Secretary of CPN-UML, has criticized Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ for his undemocratic attempts to lead the country down a path similar to Sri Lanka and Bangladesh after losing power.

Pokharel voiced his objections during a press conference held at Surkhet Airport on Thursday.

“Prachanda’s extremist approach is destabilizing the country in many ways,” Pokharel said.

“The opposition leader has become increasingly agitated within Parliament due to Prachanda’s non-parliamentary tactics. Using Sri Lanka and Bangladesh as examples is not a democratic stance,” he added.

He clarified that the intention is not to establish a rigid two-party system, but rather to encourage two parties with differing ideas.

However, he emphasized that the Nepali Congress-UML does not advocate for a strict two-party system.

“I did not propose a two-party system; I merely suggested that two strong parties are sufficient for the stability and development of the country. The competition between two parties in America has persisted for centuries. Is it impossible to have just two parties in Britain, the birthplace of Parliament?” he stated.

In another statement, Pokharel dismissed claims about Nepali Congress General Secretary’s dissatisfaction with the government as fabricated.

“Have we heard them publicly express their concerns? The story was contrived. The official decision of Congress reflects the result of their own efforts,” he said.
