Ruling coalition agrees to let Unified Socialist lead Sudurpaschim govt

KATHMANDU: With changes in the central coalition, the Madhav Nepal-led CPN-Unified Socialist Party is poised to have an immediate Chief Minister in one of the provinces.

During a meeting held in Baluwatar on Monday, the parties within the ruling coalition agreed to nominate the Chief Minister of Sudurpashchim to the Unified Socialist Party.

Unified Socialist Party had exerted pressure on the coalition partners, threatening not to provide a vote of confidence to the CPN-Maoist Center-led Bagmati Province government.

Following the parliamentary session scheduled for Monday to take a vote of confidence in Bagmati Province, an agreement has been reached in Baluwatar to allocate a Chief Minister immediately in Sudurpashchim and to foster cooperation in Bagmati as well.

After the central leaders agreed to hand over the leadership of Sudurpashchim Province to the Unified Socialist Party, Unified Socialist leaders agreed to give a vote of confidence to Bagmati Province Chief Minister Shalikram Jamkattel.

Krishna Prasad Khanaal, the leader of Unified Socialist’s Bagmati province parliamentary party, confirmed the news and added that the coalition agreed to let his party lead Bagmati in the next turn.
