Women’s empowerment key to nation-building: President Paudel

KATHMANDU: President Ram Chandra Paudel has said that achieving national prosperity and sustainable development by establishing women’s capabilities, creativity and leadership as key pillars of nation-building is the need of the hour.

Extending his best wishes to Nepali women at home and abroad on the occasion of the 8th National Women’s Rights Day, being observed today under the slogan “Respect for Women’s Rights, Campaign for Self-Reliance and Prosperity,” President Paudel stressed the importance of ending all forms of discrimination, violence and inequality against women.

“It is our collective responsibility to build a dignified and safe society free from discrimination, violence and inequality against women,” he said. “Greater cooperation between the state and civil society is needed to promote gender equality by ensuring the meaningful participation of women in the family, society, workplace and decision-making processes.”

President Paudel also expressed gratitude to all individuals and institutions that have contributed to advancing women’s rights.

National Women’s Rights Day is observed every year on Jestha 16 (May 30) to commemorate the four landmark resolutions on women’s rights passed by the reinstated House of Representatives on Jestha 16, 2063 BS.

The President expressed confidence that the day would further strengthen national and international efforts aimed at protecting women’s rights and promoting gender equality.

He noted that the government has been implementing policies and programmes to integrate women’s labour, skills, creativity and capabilities into the mainstream of development, enhance their self-reliance, ensure equal access to resources and opportunities, and increase their participation in decision-making processes.

According to the President, Nepali women have achieved remarkable success in education, science, technology, politics, public administration, arts and entrepreneurship.

“I hope this day inspires everyone to ensure the safety, dignity and rights of Nepali women through positive changes in social attitudes, traditions and practices, and to build a civilised society based on gender equality,” he said.
