KATHMANDU: Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar has expressed gratitude to the Nepali Army and the Nepal government for rescuing and assisting Indian nationals affected by the devastating floods in Nepal.
The Nepali Army rescued Indian tourists, pilgrims and workers stranded in flood-affected areas and provided them with food and shelter before moving them to safety.
Jaishankar thanked the Nepali Army and the Nepal government for their support during the crisis, particularly in assisting Indian citizens affected by the floods.
The Nepali Army had rescued 21 pilgrims from Tamil Nadu who were stranded in the flood-affected areas. Jaishankar met the pilgrims after they returned to India and thanked Nepal for its assistance.
The Nepali Army also carried out rescue operations to evacuate Indian nationals trapped at hydropower projects and other locations in the affected areas. Several Indian citizens and workers were safely evacuated from different locations.
Meanwhile, India has sent humanitarian supplies and technical teams to support Nepal’s rescue and relief efforts.
An 11-member medical and tunnel rescue team from India visited Nepal with relief supplies and conducted on-site inspections of tunnels in the flood-affected areas.
The Indian technical team carried out a reconnaissance of the affected tunnels and assessed the possibility of rescue operations and the technical measures required. Based on the team’s recommendations, preparations are underway to send an additional specialist rescue team with the necessary equipment.
India said it has so far handed over 57.5 metric tonnes of humanitarian assistance to the Nepal government following the devastating floods.
India has reiterated its commitment to continuing support for Nepal’s rescue and relief efforts. It has described the Nepali Army’s role in rescuing and protecting Indian citizens during the crisis as an important example of bilateral cooperation.
