KATHMANDU: Rescue efforts to evacuate people trapped inside the tunnel of the Trishuli-3A Hydropower Project have made significant progress, with rescuers successfully drilling a small opening through the tunnel’s upper section, or crown.
Home Minister Sudhan Gurung said the drilling has reached the crown of the tunnel and air is now being sent inside through the opening.
In a statement shared on social media, Gurung said further excavation would begin from the opening, after which rescue personnel would be sent inside to evacuate those trapped.
“We have successfully reached the upper section of the tunnel. We have started sending air through the small opening and will now begin excavation and send the rescue team inside,” Gurung said.
Security agencies, including the Nepali Army, have been continuously engaged in the rescue operation.
The operation is being carried out amid difficult terrain and significant risks inside the affected tunnel.
