GORKHA: The bodies swept away by Wednesday’s Bhotekoshi floods and recovered along the Gorkha side of the Trishuli River have been buried.
The District Administration Office said 29 of the 55 bodies recovered in the district so far have been buried.
Chief District Officer Tulsiprasad Shrestha said unidentified bodies and body parts that could not be used to establish identities were buried due to the lack of adequate morgue facilities in the district.
“We have been burying unidentified bodies as the number of bodies recovered each day continues to increase and arrangements for their management have become difficult,” Shrestha said.
He said DNA samples were collected from the bodies before burial. Due to the lack of adequate morgue facilities, the bodies were deteriorating and causing foul odours, raising concerns over the spread of disease.
According to CDO Shrestha, 23 intact bodies that may be identifiable have been recovered in Gorkha. Of these, 11 have so far been sent to Pokhara.
The remaining bodies are being kept at the morgues of Gorkha Provincial Hospital and NPI Gorkha Hospital, while some newly recovered bodies are still being brought to the hospitals.
The District Police Office buried the 29 bodies on the banks of the Budhigandaki River at Bunkotghat in Shahid Lakhan Rural Municipality-9.
Police said the bodies were buried in accordance with procedures received from the central authorities.
