Nepal sees rise in doctors and nurses per population: Economic Survey



KATHMANDU: The availability of skilled healthcare workers in Nepal has increased significantly compared to the previous fiscal year, according to the Economic Survey 2025/26.

The survey states that, as of mid-March 2026, Nepal has 1.86 doctors and 4.42 nurses per 1,000 population based on registrations with the Nepal Medical Council and Nepal Nursing Council.

During the same period of the previous fiscal year, the number stood at 1.1 doctors and 2.86 nurses per 1,000 population.

According to government data, access to both basic and specialized healthcare services has gradually improved alongside the expansion of health sector manpower.

The Economic Survey further notes that, by mid-March 2026, a total of 104,756 health personnel were employed in government services, including doctors, nurses, auxiliary nurse midwives, Ayurvedic practitioners, health assistants, and female community health volunteers.
