Govt reaches three-point agreement with Garima’s family



KATHMANDU: The government and the family of Garima Chaudhary, a three-year-old girl from Jitpur Simara Sub-Metropolitan City-1 in Bara district, have reached a three-point agreement concerning the heinous crime committed against her.

The agreement was reached during a discussion held at the Ministry of Home Affairs last evening between Home Minister Sudan Gurung, ministers from the concerned ministries, government representatives, and Garima’s parents.

Under the agreement, the government will review existing legal provisions concerning offenses and punishments in heinous criminal cases in line with public expectations. A report containing recommendations for drafting new legislation will be prepared within seven days.

To carry out the review, the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs will form a seven-member Garima Justice Commitment Committee. Similarly, the Ministry of Infrastructure Development has agreed to coordinate with the local government and take the initiative to construct a statue of Garima in accordance with the wishes of her family.

The Home Minister’s Secretariat said an agreement has also been reached to conduct Garima’s funeral in accordance with the family’s customs and traditions.

The agreement was signed on behalf of the Government of Nepal by Home Minister Sudan Gurung; Minister for Infrastructure Development Sunil Lamsal; Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Sobita Gautam; Minister for Women, Children, Gender and Sexual Minorities and Social Security Sita Badi; and Minister for Agriculture, Forest and Environment Geeta Chaudhary.

Garima’s father, Manoj Kumar Chaudhary, and mother, Manmati Chaudhary, signed the agreement on behalf of the victim’s family.

The agreement commits both sides to advancing the judicial process related to the incident and addressing the demands raised by Garima’s family.
