TEXAS: Spain secured a 2-0 victory over France in the FIFA World Cup semifinal in Arlington, Texas, earning a place in the final and extending their recent dominance over their European rivals.
The win marked Spain’s third consecutive triumph over France, having also defeated Les Bleus in the semifinals of UEFA Euro 2024 and the 2025 UEFA Nations League.
The result ended France’s bid to reach a third straight World Cup final, a feat achieved previously only by West Germany (1982–1990) and Brazil (1994–2002).
Spain took control of the match with a first-half penalty from Mikel Oyarzabal after Lamine Yamal was fouled inside the penalty area. Pedro Porro doubled the lead early in the second half with a well-taken finish following a flowing team move, putting Luis de la Fuente’s side firmly in command.
France’s challenge suffered another setback in the 30th minute when central defender William Saliba was forced off with a back injury and replaced by Maxence Lacroix. Spain maintained control throughout the match, dominating possession and effectively containing France’s attacking threats, including Kylian Mbappé, Michael Olise, and Ousmane Dembélé.
France attempted to turn the game around after halftime, with coach Didier Deschamps introducing Manu Koné and Désiré Doué in search of fresh energy. However, Spain’s relentless pressing and several crucial saves by goalkeeper Unai Simón prevented France from finding a way back into the contest.
Porro’s second-half goal effectively sealed the result as Spain comfortably held on to secure victory. The win also extended Spain’s unbeaten run to 37 matches, equaling Italy’s record, and booked their second appearance in a FIFA World Cup final.
Spain will face either England or Argentina in the final on July 19 in East Rutherford, while France will meet the loser of the other semifinal in the third-place playoff in Miami Gardens on Saturday.
