Agriculture ministry urges local levels to curb harmful pesticide use

KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development has urged local governments across the country to control the uncontrolled use of harmful and banned pesticides on fruits and vegetables.

The ministry issued the request following recent media reports and information from concerned bodies indicating excessive use of pesticides in agricultural produce, raising serious concerns over risks to human health and the environment.

In response, the ministry’s Agriculture and Livestock Promotion Division on Monday issued a five-point directive to local levels, calling for stricter monitoring and control measures.

The division stated that as the Constitution of Nepal has entrusted local governments with the responsibility of agriculture and agricultural production management, their role will be decisive in addressing the issue.

It emphasized that the matter is directly linked to public health and urged local authorities to take effective steps to regulate the use of pesticides in fruits and vegetables.
