Kispang rural Municipality Chair arrested from Singha Durbar after meeting PM



KATHMANDU: Birbal Tamang, chairperson of Kispang Rural Municipality in Nuwakot, was arrested from Singha Durbar on Monday.

Tamang was arrested by police shortly after attending a meeting called by Prime Minister Balendra Shah at Singha Durbar with local representatives from areas affected by the Bhotekoshi River flood on August 26.

Superintendent of Police Dan Bahadur Thapa, spokesperson for the Kathmandu District Police Range, confirmed that Tamang was arrested from inside Singha Durbar.

The Kathmandu District Court had authorised police to arrest Tamang in connection with a banking offence case. The Durbar Marg Police Circle had sought permission from the court to arrest him for investigation.

Police had sought his arrest during an investigation into a banking offence case filed on the complaint of Arun Aryal. According to police, the complaint and bank records indicated Tamang’s involvement in the case.

Police sought the arrest warrant under Section 9(2) of the Criminal Procedure Code, 2017. The Kathmandu District Court authorised the issuance of an arrest warrant against Tamang under Section 9(3) of the same code.

Tamang, a resident of Kispang Rural Municipality-3, is the chairperson of the rural municipality. He also operated Oshien Transport and Adventure Pvt. Ltd. in Nayabazar, Kathmandu Metropolitan City-16, together with his father, Lalsingh Tamang.

A complaint had been filed against Tamang, a director of the company, in connection with the banking offence.

The Darbar Marg Police Circle’s Crime Investigation and Action Branch had sent a letter seeking permission for his arrest to the Kathmandu District Court on May 11, 2026.

Tamang has now been presented before the Kathmandu District Court for further legal proceedings.
