Harka Sampang-led Shram Sanskriti Party stages vocal protest in Parliament over speaking time denial

KATHMANDU: Proceedings in the House of Representatives were disrupted on Wednesday after lawmakers from the Shram Sanskriti Party staged strong protests and chanted slogans, accusing the Speaker of denying them speaking time.

Lawmakers from the party, led by Chairman Harka Sampang, stood up inside the House and raised slogans alleging discrimination in parliamentary proceedings.

The protest erupted after Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal reportedly did not allocate speaking time to the party during the session. The protesting lawmakers accused the Chair of sidelining their party and questioned the fairness of the Speaker’s conduct.

During the commotion, Speaker Aryal clarified in the House that the party members were not included in the speaking list, which is why they were not called to speak. However, the explanation failed to calm the protesting lawmakers.

Chairman Sampang objected to the Speaker’s response, claiming continued disrespect and discrimination against his party inside Parliament. He remained standing in protest as the situation escalated briefly within the chamber.

Following the dispute, Shram Sanskriti Party lawmakers continued chanting slogans such as “End authoritarianism,” “No discrimination,” and “Grant speaking rights,” disrupting the proceedings for a short period.

Parliamentary business resumed after the situation was brought under control.
