Six Supreme Court justices recommended for chief justice post

KATHMANDU: The Judicial Council of  Nepal has recommended six justices of the Supreme Court of Nepal for the position of chief justice.

The recommendation comes as incumbent Chief Justice Prakash Man Singh Raut is set to retire after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 65.

The justices recommended for the post are senior-most justice Sapana Pradhan Malla and justices Kumar Regmi, Hari Phuyal, Manoj Kumar Sharma, Nahakul Subedi and Til Prasad Shrestha.

Justices who have served at the Supreme Court for at least three years are considered eligible for the chief justice position.

There is also a legal provision requiring the recommendation of a new chief justice at least one month before the incumbent retires.

However, the Constitutional Council Nepal has not yet been fully formed following the recently concluded House of Representatives elections, as the Speaker, Deputy Speaker and leader of the main opposition have yet to be finalized.

According to constitutional provisions, the proposed chief justice recommended by the Constitutional Council must be approved through a parliamentary hearing before appointment.
