Tourist footfall declines in Jiri despite its ‘Switzerland of Nepal’ tag

KATHMANDU: Known as the ‘Switzerland of Nepal’, Jiri in Dolakha district, famous for its lush hills, open landscapes, traditional settlements, and cool climate, is witnessing a decline in tourist visits.

Once considered a major entry point for foreign climbers heading to Mount Everest, locals say Jiri has recently fallen into the shadows. Despite improvements in road connectivity, lack of proper promotion, infrastructure development, and organized tourism planning has hindered expected tourist arrivals, they claim.

Tourism experts highlight destinations around Jiri, such as Chyordung Danda, Hanumante Danda, Jireshwari Mahadev, Shailung Danda, Kalinchok Bhagwati, Bigu Monastery, Tamakoshi River region, and Rolwaling area, as having significant tourism potential. They say that packaging these destinations together with Jiri could attract both domestic and international tourists.

Locals believe that by preserving local culture, agricultural lifestyles, and natural beauty while promoting sustainable tourism, Jiri can once again become a popular destination.
