KATHMANDU: Nepal has been elected as the Chair of the First Committee on Disarmament and International Security under the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), marking a significant diplomatic achievement for the country.
The First Committee deals with global issues related to disarmament, international security, and peacebuilding, and plays a key role in shaping discussions and decisions on matters of international security within the UN system.
The appointment is being viewed as a major recognition of Nepal’s long-standing commitment to multilateralism, international peace, security, and global disarmament efforts spanning more than seven decades.
Following his election, Nepal’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Lok Bahadur Thapa, expressed gratitude to member states for their trust and support.
He said Nepal would carry out the responsibility with impartiality, transparency, and inclusiveness, according to the Permanent Mission of Nepal in New York.
