Annapurna Rural Municipality announces public holiday to mark 75th anniversary of Annapurna I ascent

MYAGDI: Annapurna Rural Municipality has declared a public holiday on Tuesday, June 3, to mark the 75th anniversary of the first successful ascent of Annapurna I (8,091 meters), located in Ward 4 of Narchyang.

On June 3, 1950, French mountaineers Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal became the first climbers in history to summit Annapurna I, one of the world’s highest peaks.

In honor of this historic achievement, the rural municipality has announced a public holiday across all government offices, ward offices, and public institutions within its jurisdiction.

According to Chief Administrative Officer Ram Prasad Sharma, the holiday aims to commemorate the occasion with dignity and pride, recognizing the historic importance of the climb.

The decision was made during the executive meeting of the rural municipality held on May 12 and was officially published in the gazette on May 30.

A special celebration is scheduled to take place on the anniversary day, which will feature the presence of the son and grandson of Maurice Herzog, adding emotional and historical significance to the event.

The municipality aims to honor the legacy of Annapurna I’s first summit and promote the region’s mountaineering heritage.
