Parliamentary committee conducts hearings for SC and Judicial Council nominees

KATHMANDU: The Parliamentary Hearing Committee conducted the parliamentary hearings for proposed Supreme Court Justice Shanti Singh Thapa and Judicial Council member nominee Mahesh Kumar Nepal.

The committee meeting held on Monday at Singha Durbar heard the two nominees. Earlier, on Sunday, the committee had heard proposed Supreme Court justices Meghraj Pokharel and Shreekant Paudel.

Although the hearings for all nominees have been completed, the committee was unable to decide on their approval on Monday.

Committee Chairperson Ishwaridevi Nyaupane informed that discussions on the nominees are still pending and that a decision will be made in the next meeting due to members’ busy schedules.

During the meeting, committee members questioned proposed Justice Shanti Singh Thapa about her future plans. She responded that the Constitution clearly demarcates the boundaries between the judiciary, legislature, and executive, and none should interfere in the others’ affairs.

She highlighted that where arbitrariness arises under the guise of non-interference, the principle of checks and balances must be applied. Thapa expressed her commitment to work conscientiously within the framework of the Constitution, laws, and the principle of separation of powers.

Similarly, Judicial Council member nominee Mahesh Kumar Nepal stated that he is deeply committed to his duties, fully responsible to the Constitution, and dedicated to strengthening an independent, impartial, and capable judiciary.
