Govt aims for rice self-sufficiency within two years

KATHMANDU: The government has set a policy goal to make Nepal self-reliant in rice production within the next two years.

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel announced this while presenting the budget for the upcoming fiscal year in a joint session of the Federal Parliament.

The budget includes various programs aimed at modernizing agriculture and increasing production.

It emphasizes training and skill development for the population dependent on agriculture. Adequate supplies of fertilizers and seeds will be ensured, and special provisions will be made for agriculture and livestock development by dividing the country into super zones and zones.

The government has also allocated budget provisions to achieve self-sufficiency in grains, vegetables, and meat production. Programs have been introduced to maintain soil fertility and promote organic fertilizers to increase the production of organic fruits and vegetables.

Efforts will be made to control crop-damaging animals such as monkeys, wild boars, and nilgai, particularly in affected districts, while promoting ginger cultivation in these areas. The government will also facilitate the provision of quality seeds and boost meat export promotion programs.

Additionally, a program to produce 4.28 million fish fry is planned for the upcoming fiscal year. The government will also focus on promoting the export of cardamom, tea, and coffee.
