World Meditation Day being observed today

KATHMANDU: As declared by the United Nations, World Meditation Day is being observed today.

The United Nations designated December 21 as World Meditation Day, and the occasion is being observed in Nepal as well. The UN General Assembly has recognized yoga and meditation as complementary approaches to promoting physical and mental health.

On December 7 last year, the United Nations officially recognized December 21 as World Meditation Day. The day was celebrated for the first time the same year at Tundikhel under government organization, and this year too the celebrations are being held under the government’s leadership.

Experts and practitioners in the field say Nepal has the potential to be developed as the “meditation capital” of the world. After 11 years of continuous efforts, the United Nations approved the proposal, which was first put forward in 2014.

On December 7 last year, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution supported by 18 countries, including Nepal, to formally observe World Meditation Day.

On the occasion, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has organized a program this morning at Army Pavilion, Tundikhel in Kathmandu.

Similarly, a group meditation session followed by an interaction on meditation is being held at Brahmananda Saraswati Gram in Bosan, Dakshinkali Municipality–1. Other concerned organizations are also organizing various programs across the country to mark the day.
