Siraha jail holds three times its capacity

SIRAHA: The District Jail in Siraha is grappling with severe overcrowding, housing more than three times its intended capacity. Designed to accommodate 150 inmates, the prison currently holds 458 prisoners, putting immense strain on both infrastructure and daily operations.

According to Jail Chief Subodh Mahato, the overcrowding has forced inmates to sleep in shifts due to extreme congestion and summer heat. “Managing the prison has become increasingly difficult,” Mahato said. “During inspection, inmates requested additional cooling facilities like fans and air coolers.”

In response to rising concerns, a joint monitoring team comprising officials from Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, National Investigation Department, and the District Administration Office visited the prison today. The inspection aimed to assess complaints related to poor conditions and alleged illegal activities inside the jail.

Adding to the challenge, the prison infrastructure—dating back 54 years—is in a deteriorated state. Both the building and boundary walls are reportedly dilapidated, raising further concerns about safety and security. Prison authorities have repeatedly appealed for repairs and support.

Previously, a committee was formed to investigate allegations of criminal activities inside the jail. However, the findings of the report, which took one and a half months to complete, have yet to be made public.
