Minister Ghisings orders action on long-stalled infrastructure projects

KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, along with the Ministries of Physical Infrastructure and Transportation and Urban Development, will soon terminate contracts for long-stalled and neglected development projects, officials confirmed.

Minister Kulman Ghising directed the secretaries and department heads of all three ministries to immediately prepare and submit a list of such derelict projects. The move comes as part of an effort to ensure accountability and prevent projects from remaining idle due to inactive contractors.

Reviewing the progress of ongoing works, Minister Ghising stressed that construction companies failing to deliver should not be allowed to hold projects hostage.

“When large infrastructure projects are not completed on time and to the expected quality, the country suffers significant economic losses, and citizens are deprived of the benefits these projects are meant to provide. It is a paradox that we can no longer ignore,” Ghising said. “No consideration will be given based on a contractor’s reputation or standing. Identify, evaluate, and submit the list of stalled projects immediately.”

Among the projects highlighted are the national pride Sunkoshi Marin Multipurpose Irrigation Project under the irrigation sector, more than three road construction projects, and over a hundred bridge projects under physical infrastructure, all of which have been left incomplete for years.

“Work does not happen without decisions. Therefore, we will take decisions and act. Contracts for stalled projects will be terminated and re-tendered. No project should be left neglected,” Minister Ghising said.
