KATHMANDU: The Nepal Panchanga Niryanak Samitee has commenced a six-month training program for Brahmins performing Purana readings, astrology, and rituals, following preparations to issue licenses for these practices.
The decision comes amid an influx of aspiring astrologers and ritual performers seeking formal training.
According to the committee’s executive director, Surya Prasad Dhungel, the training program started from March 16, driven by high demand from individuals eager to obtain licenses.
“We have seen a surge in interest, with about three dozen trainees coming forward on their own to enroll in the program,” said Dhungel.
To promote inclusivity, the committee has introduced exemptions for women and disabled individuals who wish to participate. Additionally, indigenous communities and Dalits have also shown interest in astrology training, indicating a diverse range of participants.
“Women are also increasingly keen on ritual training, and many trainees are from the Brahmin community,” Dhungel said.
The fee for the six-month training has been set at Rs 15,000, with an additional examination fee.
Committee chairman Prof. Shree Krishna Adhikari emphasized that licensing will help regulate storytellers, astrologers, and ritual performers, bringing them under the tax net and ensuring standardized practices.
Meanwhile, Valmiki Vidyapeeth has initiated a one-year training program specifically for Pandits who wish to recite Puranas according to the classical method.
Valmiki Principal Achyut Prasad Lamichhane noted that the program was launched in response to complaints regarding the improper recitation of Puranas. Trainees will undergo daily one-hour sessions for a year to master the classical techniques of Purana recitation.
The move to license ritual performers and astrologers marks a significant step towards formalizing these practices and preserving traditional methods while promoting inclusivity and quality assurance.
