Subpar blacktopping on Gharapjhong road raises concerns

MUSTANG: Construction contractors have been accused of compromising quality in road construction projects in the district.

The ring road connecting all five wards of Gharapjhong Rural Municipality has subpar blacktopping, which has sparked public outrage and raised questions about the role of oversight authorities.

In response to growing complaints about the poor quality of the blacktop on the Jomsom-Thini road section of the ring road, the Ward-5 office of the local government sent a letter of clarification to the Infrastructure Development Office.

The road was blacktopped as part of the “One Constituency, One Road” project, overseen by the Infrastructure Development Office of Mustang under the Gandaki Province government.

Locals claim the road, which was blacktopped several years ago, has started to crack open due to the use of substandard materials.

However, the construction company has attributed the issue to low temperatures. Ghanashyam Rokamagar, the project’s information officer, explained, “The blacktopping should have been done at an optimal temperature. Adverse temperatures can compromise the quality of construction,” he added.
