Sher Bahadur Deuba questions interim government, hands over leadership to Khadka before leaving for Singapore treatment

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has raised questions over the functioning of the interim government, making his first public appearance since being assaulted at his private residence in Budhanilkantha during the Gen-Z protest on September 9.

Addressing party leaders at the Nepali Congress central office in Sanepa, Deuba said Prime Minister Sushila Karki’s interim government appeared unwilling to cooperate with political parties. “There should be no more conflict in the country. The party must remain united in light of the evolving political situation,” he said. “We need to strengthen the party’s internal structure and move toward holding the 15th General Convention. At this stage, coordination with other political parties is essential.”

Deuba criticized the dissolution of the House of Representatives, calling it unconstitutional. “There is no guarantee of free and fair elections at present. For elections to be credible, peace and security must be ensured,” he said. “In a multiparty democracy, it is essential for the government to hold dialogue with political parties, but that has not been happening.”

He also advised NC leaders to maintain dialogue with other political forces, including CPN-UML. “We must engage with other parties to safeguard national unity and democracy,” he said. “After a long political journey, I remain committed to the country and the people. I have always been devoted to the Nepali Congress.”

Deuba also highlighted his efforts to combat corruption and promote social reform. “I have worked to eradicate untouchability and advance women’s rights,” he said. “My political life has always been dedicated to serving the nation.”

Following his address, Deuba handed over the responsibility of acting party president to Vice President Purna Bahadur Khadka before departing for Singapore for further medical treatment. According to a central committee member, Deuba informed party leaders that he was leaving the country for continued care, weeks after receiving 12 stitches on the back of his head from injuries sustained during the September assault.
