KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court has ordered newly appointed Madhesh Province Chief Minister Saroj Kumar Yadav not to make any decisions of long-term significance.
Yadav, the parliamentary party leader of CPN-UML, was appointed chief minister early Monday morning by Province Chief Sumitra Subedi Bhandari from the Panas Hotel in Bardibas, Mahottari. The move sparked protests from seven political parties.
The interim order was issued by a single bench of Justice Tek Prasad Dhungana in response to a writ petition filed by Raki Prasad Yadav challenging the province chief’s decision.
Justice Dhungana’s order instructs Chief Minister Yadav to refrain from making or implementing any policy-level decisions of long-term importance until the final verdict.
Province Chief Bhandari had appointed Yadav as chief minister under Article 168 (3) of the Constitution, citing his position as the leader of the largest party in the provincial assembly.
Following the controversial swearing-in at dawn, lawmakers from the Nepali Congress, CPN (Maoist Centre), and other parties protested and vandalized the Chief Minister’s Office. Yadav has not yet been able to assume office due to the ongoing dispute.
