100 parties register for proportional electoral system

KATHMANDU: A total of 100 political parties have applied to the Election Commission (EC) for participation in the proportional electoral system for the upcoming House of Representatives (HoR) election scheduled for March 5, 2026.

The deadline for party registration concluded with the Election Commission confirming that 100 parties submitted applications.

The applicants include parties using joint election symbols as well as those with individual symbols. The Commission said it will finalize and approve the applications by December 12 after completing the necessary review.

As per the Commission’s election schedule, parties must submit their closed lists for the proportional system on December 28 and 29. Following verification, a preliminary list will be published on January 18, and the final list will be released on February 3 after claims, objections, and necessary investigations are addressed.

Of the total 275 seats in the House of Representatives, 165 members will be elected through the first-past-the-post system, while the remaining 110 will be chosen through the proportional representation system.
