KATHMANDU: A large amount of pesticide has been detected in cauliflower brought to the Kalimati Vegetable Market, raising concerns over food safety.
According to the Kalimati Vegetable and Fruit Market Development Committee, the cauliflower sourced from Dhading was found to contain 71.48% of organophosphate pesticide.
The pesticide was identified following a test conducted by the Central Agricultural Laboratory on Sunday, which sampled 19 vegetable and fruit shops in the market. The tests specifically targeted carbamate and organophosphate group pesticides.
Under food safety standards, pesticide levels higher than 45% are considered inedible, posing a potential health risk to consumers.
Less than 35% is deemed safe for consumption, while a concentration between 35 to 45% can be kept for a short period.
Authorities are taking action to address the issue and ensure that food sold at the market meets safety standards.
