House of Representatives meeting adjourned until Thursday

KATHMANDU: The House of Representatives (HoR) meeting was adjourned without being convened today.

According to the Speaker’s Secretariat, the meeting has now been rescheduled for 1 PM tomorrow, Thursday.

Earlier on Tuesday, a notice had been issued stating that the meeting was adjourned until 1 PM today, but no formal adjournment was carried out.

The ongoing deadlock stems from opposition parties demanding the resignation of Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak and the formation of a high-level investigation committee, citing his alleged involvement in the visit visa scandal.

Today’s meeting, initially set for 1 PM, was delayed and rescheduled for 3:15 PM. However, it could not take place at that time either and has now been postponed until tomorrow.

Earlier today, the main opposition party Maoist Centre, along with other parties, maintained its demand that Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak must resign over the visit visa controversy before allowing the House to function.

Speaker Devraj Ghimire had called a meeting of chief whips of major parties to resolve the impasse.

During the discussion, Maoist Centre Chief Whip Hit Raj Pandey reiterated that the minister’s resignation was necessary for the Parliament to proceed, stating that the issue has raised serious questions.

Speaker Ghimire’s press advisor Shekhar Adhikari confirmed that negotiations failed due to the opposing stances—while the opposition insists on the minister’s resignation, ruling parties demand the minister be allowed to address Parliament first.
