97-year-old Bhatta receives citizenship at home

DARCHULA: Senior citizens and people with disabilities in Byas Rural Municipality who are unable to travel to the district headquarters, Khalanga, have been issued citizenship certificates at their doorsteps.

A team led by Assistant Chief District Officer Mohan Singh Dhami visited the homes of elderly and disabled individuals to distribute citizenship certificates and national identity cards.

Among the recipients was 97-year-old Lalu Devi Bhatta of Byas-6, who expressed her joy, saying, “I am happy to receive my citizenship at home.”

Assistant Chief District Officer Dhami stated that the initiative aimed to deliver essential services directly to people’s homes, especially for those facing mobility challenges.

In total, the team distributed citizenship certificates to 161 residents from Byas Wards 3, 4, 5, and 6, and national identity cards to 205 individuals.

Among those who received citizenship, 138 were senior citizens and two were persons with disabilities. Similarly, national identity cards were issued to 197 senior citizens and five people with disabilities.

The distribution program was carried out upon the request of Byas Rural Municipality, said municipality spokesperson Upendra Singh Dhami.

He explained that many residents could not afford the cost and effort of traveling to the district headquarters. “Instead of spending Rs. 3,000 to 4,000 for the journey, we arranged for citizenship and ID cards to be delivered in the village,” he said.
