KATHMANDU: Authorities in Odisha India have begun an investigation into the death of Prisa Sah, a Nepali national and first-year Computer Science student at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Odisha.
According to a statement from the university, local police informed KIIT around 8:10 PM on Thursday about a suspected suicide. The university promptly notified Sah’s family of the incident.
“In this time of grief, the State Government expresses its condolences and stands in support of the bereaved family,” the statement said. It also confirmed that high-ranking officials, including the Commissioner of Police and the Revenue Divisional Commissioner, visited the scene to assess the situation. A forensic team is currently conducting an investigation at the location.
In response to the tragedy, Nepal’s Foreign Minister Dr. Arzu Rana has launched a diplomatic initiative to ensure a thorough inquiry into Sah’s death in her campus hostel.
Minister Rana stated that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs quickly contacted senior officials from the Indian central and Odisha state governments, as well as the Nepali Embassy in New Delhi, to facilitate a comprehensive investigation.
Posting on Facebook, she expressed her grief, saying: “Soon after the incident, the Ministry took diplomatic steps through key officials in India and the Nepali Embassy in Delhi to seek the truth.”
“I am deeply saddened by the untimely death of Prisa Sah, a young Nepali student at KIIT. I pray for the peace of her soul and extend my heartfelt condolences to her family,” she added.
Indian media reported that Sah was found lifeless in her hostel room. While the exact cause of death remains unknown, a postmortem examination is currently underway.
This marks the second death of a Nepali student at KIIT in recent months. On February 4, another student from Nepal, 20-year-old Prakriti Lamsal of Rupandehi, was also discovered dead in the same hostel.
