KATHMANDU: The second edition of the Tenzing Norgay Sherpa Open Climbing Competition is scheduled to take place on March 16 and 17, aiming to promote mountaineering sports and celebrate the legacy of Tenzing Norgay Sherpa.

The event is being jointly organized by the US Nepal Climbers Association and the Nepal National Mountain Guide Association, organizers announced at a press conference on Wednesday.

Jangbu Sherpa, founding president of the US Nepal Climbers Association, said the competition’s goal was to inspire climbers and promote adventure tourism in Nepal.

“This event will further encourage enthusiasts and help popularize mountaineering as a sport,” he said.

The competition will unfold in two phases: a qualifying round on the first day and the semi-finals and finals on the second day.

While the location for the qualifying round is yet to be announced, the semi-finals and finals will be held at the Crimpanzee Adventure Hub in Bouddha.

Participants aged 12 and above are eligible to compete, with separate categories for men and women. Organizers expect 40–45 participants in the men’s category and 20–25 in the women’s.

Winners will receive cash prizes, with Rs 45,000 for first place, Rs 35,000 for second place, and Rs 15,000 for third place.

“This competition is more than just a sporting event; it’s a celebration of climbing culture, camaraderie, and the indomitable spirit of Tenzing Norgay Sherpa,” said Pimba Tenzing Lama, general secretary of the Nepal National Mountain Guide Association.

The organizers expressed hope that the event will further strengthen Nepal’s reputation as a global hub for adventure sports.
