Bhim Rawal expelled from CPN-UML, ending four-decade association

KATHMANDU: The CPN-UML has expelled former Vice-Chair Dr. Bhim Rawal from the party’s organized membership, marking the end of his four-decade-long association with the party.

A secretariat meeting held on Wednesday decided to terminate Rawal’s membership, stating that his actions and statements were against the party’s interests.

Deputy General Secretary Pradeep Gyawali confirmed the decision to the media, highlighting that Rawal’s continuous anti-party activities had weakened the organization.

Rawal, who contested against Chair KP Sharma Oli during the party’s 10th general convention, had been sidelined within UML after losing the election.

In the convention, held in Chitwan in 2021, Oli secured 1,837 votes, significantly surpassing Rawal’s 223.

Following his defeat, Rawal maintained a critical stance toward the party leadership, voicing dissent both in Parliament and public forums.

His opposition was labeled as “organizational anarchy” by Oli’s faction.

Rawal’s removal comes amidst reports of dissatisfaction with his behavior, including his decision to challenge Oli for the party chair, which strained their relationship.

Despite his criticism of party decisions, Rawal’s influence remains strong in the Sudurpashchim and Karnali provinces.

The expulsion could impact UML’s standing in these regions, where Rawal continues to have significant support.
