KATHMANDU: Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr. Arzu Rana, currently attending the 79th United Nations General Assembly in New York, has urged the international community to take action for the safe release of Bipin Joshi, a Nepali student believed to be in the custody of the extremist group Hamas.

Addressing the Ministerial Meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement, she emphasized the urgent need for global support in securing Joshi’s release.

Minister Rana stated that Nepal is eagerly awaiting his safe return.

Ten Nepalis lost their lives during Hamas’ assault on Israel on October 7, 2023, and Joshi was taken captive shortly after the attack.

The Foreign Minister condemned the raid by Hamas and reiterated Nepal’s ongoing calls for Joshi’s safe release.

Highlighting the importance of collective international efforts for global peace, she remarked, “We are at a critical juncture in history, facing the highest number of conflicts. We must prioritize the protection of citizens from armed conflict.”

Dr. Rana lamented the continued failure of international efforts to stop wars, restore peace, and instill hope.

“As we commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions, the principles meant to protect civilians are being systematically ignored or misinterpreted by powerful nations,” she said, calling for immediate action to rectify this situation and promote peace and coexistence.

Referencing ongoing conflicts, including those in Israel and Palestine, as well as Russia and Ukraine, she advocated for an immediate ceasefire, the release of hostages, and full implementation of Council Resolution 2735 (2024).

The Minister further urged all parties to adhere to international humanitarian and human rights laws, ensure accountability for violations, and respect international law, including the UN Charter.

Dr. Rana condemned the indiscriminate attacks on civilians, including UN officials, humanitarian workers, journalists, and health professionals.

She highlighted the extensive devastation in Gaza, which has left civilians in constant fear and deprived of basic necessities such as food, education, healthcare, and clean water.

Dr. Rana also called on the international community to exert pressure on warring parties and seek innovative solutions to conflicts.

She reaffirmed Nepal’s commitment as a member of the Non-Aligned Movement and appealed for global unity in the pursuit of peace and coexistence.
