Election Commission seeks clarification from Koshi CM Hikmat Karki over code violation



KATHMANDU: The Election Commission has sought a clarification from Koshi Province Chief Minister Hikmat Karki, accusing him of violating the election code of conduct.

According to the Commission, Karki has been asked to submit a written explanation within three days. The move follows his participation in the nomination registration of CPN-UML Chair KP Sharma Oli in Jhapa-5.

The Election Commission stated that ministers and government officials are prohibited from taking part in such political activities once the election code of conduct comes into effect. Karki’s presence at the nomination program was therefore deemed a violation.

On Tuesday, Karki was seen accompanying Oli in Jhapa during the nomination filing process, despite the election code already being enforced.

The Commission has warned that further action may be taken depending on Karki’s response to the clarification notice.
