KATHMANDU: Prime Minister and Chancellor of Tribhuvan University (TU), KP Sharma Oli, has directed the Vice Chancellor, Deans and Campus Chief to run colleges based on meritocracy.

During the Senate of the oldest university of the country, TU, PM Oli, viewed the Deans and Chief of Campuses need to be appointed in a way that help smooth running and favours meritocracy.

Vice Chancellor is the person to take a lead to run university, he reminded, adding that fair administration is imperative.

A Senate member had raised a question why the appointments of the persons recommended as Dean and Campus Chiefs were not materialized. To which, PM Oli, directed for appointment within December 22.

“TU must be run in fair and rule-based manner. TU’s autonomy is not individual freedom, the rights devolved via Senate,” Oli said, arguing, “There must not be drama in the name of meritocracy.”

The Chancellor argued there was media stunt that he interfered with university. “For the right cause, I should play my role. I don’t interfere, but believe in meritocracy,” Chancellor Oli reiterated.

According to him, Senate warrants creative and mature discussion rather that a place for criticism. He also urged the office bearers to conduct Senate with proper agenda so that it ensures positive result.

Those attended the Senate complained that the office bearers failed to make adequate homework to set agenda.

PM Oli vowed rule-based address to the genuine demands made to resolve problems facing university.
