KATHMANDU: Dilip Raut from Dhanusha, Nepal, who was extradited from Kuwait after Interpol issued a red notice, has been jailed in connection with a human trafficking case involving the exploitation of Nepali women abroad.
Raut, accused of trafficking women by falsely promising jobs, was extradited to Nepal through Interpol’s assistance on Monday. According to Bhavesh Rimal, spokesperson for the Nepal Police Human Trafficking Investigation Bureau, Raut was presented to the Kathmandu District Court on Tuesday, which subsequently ordered his remand.
The investigation revealed that Raut allegedly lured Nepali women with promises of high-paying jobs in Dubai, offering salaries of up to Rs 40,000 per month. Once the women arrived on visit visas, he reportedly held them hostage in a flat, forcing them into exploitative domestic labor and subjecting them to severe labor and sexual exploitation.
The ordeal intensified when Raut convinced one of the women to travel from Dubai to Kuwait under the pretense of better job prospects as an office cleaner. After realizing she had been trafficked, the woman requested to return to Nepal. Raut allegedly demanded a payment of Rs 675,000 for her release, which she managed to pay to get away.
Following her return, the victim filed a formal complaint with the Human Trafficking Investigation Bureau on June 13, initiating the search for Raut. On October 4, Nepal Police issued a red notice through Interpol, targeting Raut’s whereabouts in Kuwait. He was apprehended and extradited with the cooperation of Interpol’s Kuwait branch.
Superintendent Rimal confirmed that, after his presentation to the court, Raut was remanded to custody.
