Consumer inflation rate held steady at 5.26 percent

KATHMANDU: The annual consumer inflation rate held steady at 5.26 percent, showcasing a slight improvement from the 7.26 percent recorded in the same month the previous year in mid-December, 2023 to mid-January, 2024.

Breaking down the figures, the food and beverages group experienced a 5.77 percent inflation, while the non-food and services group saw a slightly lower rate at 4.85 percent by mid-January.

Surprisingly, mid-January witnessed a decrease in the annual point price index for key categories like ghee and oil, vegetables, meat and fish, and transportation sub-groups.

Indices for spices and sugar, as well as sugar-related products, also exhibited a gradual decline.

Nepal Rastra Bank has reported a reduction in the growth rates of the import price index, salary and wage rate, and wholesale price index in January, measured on an annual point basis.

Despite the overall economic landscape, the annual point salary and wage rate index registered a 5.56 percent increase in January, a notable shift from the 10.27 percent surge recorded in the corresponding month of the previous year.
