Nepal Bar Association protests against Judicial Council regulations amendment

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Bar Association (NBA) staged a protest on Sunday by picketing the Secretariat of the Judicial Council.

This demonstration was in opposition to recent amendments made to the ‘Regulations of the Judicial Council.’

The protest occurred ahead of a council meeting that had been scheduled.

The NBA has been vocal against the recommendation to appoint judges under the current regulations, arguing that these amendments violate the Constitution of Nepal.

It is noteworthy that there are currently 50 vacant judge positions, including four in the Supreme Court, which have yet to be filled.

The association has been demanding the annulment of the first amendment to the ‘Regulations of the Judicial Council,’ insisting that the changes made are unconstitutional.

Meanwhile, reports suggest that the ruling alliance is preparing to proceed with recommendations for these judicial appointments.
