Gold smuggle case: Nepal seeks Hong Kong’s support in its investigation

KATHMANDU: Nepal has sought assistance from Hong Kong in investigating a case of gold smuggling into the country.

The Customs Department of Nepal has requested information from its counterpart in Hong Kong regarding the individuals responsible for exporting the gold.

According to Punya Bikram Khadka, the Department’s spokesperson said that they have sent a letter seeking details about the exporter behind the shipment.

The incident occurred on July 18 when Nepali authorities intercepted a shipment of motorcycle shoe brakes weighing over one quintal, which concealed the smuggled gold.

The shipment had been loaded into a taxi departing from Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport.

The gold was imported by a company named Ready Trade, and a total of 18 individuals have been arrested under suspicion of being involved in the smuggling operation.
