KATHMANDU: Ganesh Parajuli has been sworn in as chairperson of the Parliamentary Special Committee on the Impact of Climate Change on the Himalayas, Climate Justice and the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli Disaster.
Parajuli took the oath before Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal at Singha Durbar on Wednesday.
The special committee was formed to study the impacts of climate change on the Himalayas and the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli disaster and recommend measures for the rehabilitation of affected citizens, sustainable reconstruction, future risk reduction, legal and institutional reforms, and climate justice.
Following his oath-taking, Parajuli said the committee would conduct a detailed study of previous disaster preparedness efforts and work to improve rescue, relief and rehabilitation. It will also examine ways to make development infrastructure safer and more resilient to climate change, he said.
He pledged to prepare a strong report aimed at reducing disaster risks and ensuring that affected people feel they have received justice.
Parajuli said that despite time constraints due to the Dashain-Tihar holidays and the gap between parliamentary sessions, the committee would make every effort to complete its work within the stipulated timeframe, given the broad range of issues it needs to address.
