SC grants Sandeep Lamichhane permission to go abroad

'No need to re-incarcerate Lamichhane'

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court (SC) has ordered government not to keep cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane in custody and let him travel abroad.

Hearing on the writ petition filed by former cricket captain Sandeep Lamichhane against the Patan High Court’s order to restrict his foreign visit and district attorney’s writ to hold him back to custody, the division bench of justices Sapana Pradhan Malla and Kumar Chudal gave verdict as sought by petitioner Lamichhane.

SC ordered that Sandeep Lamichhane, a player of the national cricket team, who was accused of raping a minor, should not be re-incarcerated.

On Monday, the bench of Justice Sapna Pradhan Malla and Kumar Chudal upheld the order of the High Court and ordered not to keep him in jail again.

On January 12th, a division bench of Patan High Court Judges Dhruvraj Nand and Ramesh Dhakal ordered the release of Sandeep on bail. There was a ban on going abroad and leaving the Kathmandu Valley. It was said that this order will be canceled immediately if the condition set by the court is not followed. Dissatisfied with the High Court verdict, Lamichhane filed a petition in the SC saying that he had to go abroad to play cricket.

The public prosecutor approached the Supreme Court against the High Court’s decision.

Although SC granted Lamichhane the permission for travelling abroad for matches, it has ordered him to update the court within 15 days of such travels.
