KATHMANDU: About 36,000 young people have applied to go to Korea’s shipping related industry.
From August 5 to August 9, 35,482 applications have been submitted to the Foreign Employment Department. Among them, 2,276 are women, the department said.
Gurudatta Subedi, head of the EPS branch of the department, said that 2,500 youth will be selected from the youth who have applied. In the first phase, the department will conduct the language test and in the second phase, the skill test will be conducted.
EPS branch chief Subedi said that the language exam will start on September 18. Along with the language test, the department will also conduct a skill test.
The department will keep the name of the youth who have passed the language and skill test in the roster. The Korean employer will sign a labor contract with the youth selected from among the workers listed on the roster. Even in the labor contract, after the employer provides the visa, young people can go to Korea with a work permit.
Selected youths to fly Korea within 6 months
Selected youths will be allowed to fly to Korea within 6 months. They will be able to work in five areas, namely scaffolding, insulation, grinder, welding, pipe machinery, and electric cabling in the shipbuilding sector of Korea. Even after reaching Korea, the employer will give Nepali workers two months of skill training with a salary. After the training, if the workers want to change the workplace, they can only go to another similar company. The Roster in the Shipbuilding Sector will have a two-year term.
The department had earlier selected eight hundred and ninety-two workers who were selected for the manufacturing sector and listed in the roster and placed them in the shipping sector. Out of which 238 workers have already reached Korea. The minimum wage for workers in this sector will be Rs. 200 thousand.
About 23,000 young people arrived in Korea last year
In the last fiscal year 079/80, 22,922 Nepali youth workers reached Korea. Out of which 16 thousand 681 were new workers and 6 thousand 241 old workers went back to Korea. Nepal is at the forefront of sending workers to Korea through the EPS system. A laborer going to Korea has a term of four years and 10 months.
Nine thousand Nepalese youth are currently listed in the roster of workers going to Korea. Out of which 6000 are in the production sector and 3000 are in the agriculture sector. There are 3,000 old workers among those listed. Among the old workers, 2,500 are from the manufacturing sector and 500 have gone to the agricultural sector, EPS chief Subedi said.
So far, 89,000 Nepalese youth have reached Korea. About 23,000 workers arrived in Korea last year. A labor agreement was signed between Korea and Nepal in 2007.
According to the agreement, Korea has started taking workers from Nepal since 2008. Korea has been taking workers from Nepal for agriculture and production sector. Apart from Nepal, Korea has taken workers from 16 countries including Bangladesh, Myanmar, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos.
